Backyard Organization Ideas

These backyard organization ideas will up your outdoor space serenity almost instantly! Every outdoor space deserves to be just as lovely and calming as your indoor space and so I’m sharing how we elevated ours with organization.

One of the things that we fell in love with when we first saw our house was the outdoor space that was involved. We live in a small town with a lot of old houses and big yards are not a frequent quality of many homes here. The fact that it also had a pool and a large deck didn't hurt, either. Shaun has done an incredible job of updating all of the area surrounding our home. From clearing out an insane amount of debris left by the previous owners to creating a hydrangea garden for me, he's really turned this yard around a full 180 degrees into a bit of an oasis that we absolutely adore.

Pictured above is our main seating area. We have a sofa and 2 cozy chairs that I could just sit in all day long. The table was left by the previous owners. I love that it's large and square. We could easily fit 8 people at this table.

I recently started using this patio basket, as pictured on the table. Every time we came outside, I'd run around grabbing sunscreen, goggles for the pool, towels, my phone, a book (ha ha ha ha, I have 2 kids), water bottles and more. Finally, I took an empty plastic basket from our unused stash, filled it up, and now it's a permanent home for all the things that frequently come outside with us. Highly recommend doing this!

Before we moved, I had always dreamed of having an outdoor space that felt like an extension of our family room. I had also dreamt of twinkle lights. Shaun to the rescue. He added these wooden extenders and stained them to serve as a place to string up our lights. They look so cute and twinkly at night. It makes the whole deck feel super cozy and they just make me happy! I found this tutorial which is similar to what we did, if you're interested in doing it too!

If you look all the way in the back in the above picture, there's a shed that we plan to tear down someday soon and replace it.

We also have lots of plants. We have two raised deck box planters that came with us from our Jersey City apartment and they look so great around the deck to help frame it.

Again, this is Shaun's territory. He planted geraniums, marigolds and some lettuce and strawberries. The kids love going out to check and see if any strawberries are ready to be harvested.

In the standing planters, we have tomato plants and pepper plants. Someday we'd love to have a more extensive garden, however, we have so many animals that lurk and love to eat everything, so for now, planters it is.

We also have a pool! I actually didn't want to keep the pool when we moved in because pools and small kids terrify me. But, now that we have it - and especially this summer - I'm glad that we kept it. We installed gates separating the sitting/hang out area and the pool area, so Henry's not allowed in the pool area unless Shaun or I are with him. I also invested in the Safety Turtle Wristband Alarm Kit (a bracelet that kids can wear and if it gets wet, an alarm goes off), and we recently got a general pool alarm that sits in the water. It just arrived so we haven't set it up yet, but it's the Pool Patrol if you're looking for one as well.

Lastly, I have to tell you about our deck boxes! We absolutely love these storage boxes that we keep right on the deck. (You can see that this is one of the gates we installed but haven't stained yet).

One is organized with all of the kids pool and outdoor toys, while the other keeps pool chemicals and the pool vacuum. It's also worth noting that we keep that one locked so the kids can't access anything with chemicals in it.
