A Pink and Purple Girl's Bedroom

A little girl's dream pink and purple bedroom. We call it the cotton candy room...in the best possible way!

When we told P we’d be moving to a new house and she’d get her own room, she decided immediately that she wanted a pink and purple room.

Cue the scared face. I wanted to give her what she wanted but also had immediate visions of garish dark pink and purple circus-inspired stripes - and not in a good way. So I took on the challenge of making this a chic twist on pink and purple, something that would be special and comforting - a place that any 6 year old would love to spend time in, and one that wouldn’t hurt mom’s eyes in the process.

Here's what it looked like just a few days after we moved in:

This room belonged to a teenage boy previously and was in dire need of some fresh paint.

We tore the carpet up as the movers were waiting outside her door. The floors were hardwood underneath but in major disrepair. Stained and just overall in need of refinishing. Because we wanted her to feel cozy in her room as soon as possible, we refinished the floors within a month of moving in.

We had bought her loft bed with storage by Maxtrix Kids when we lived in the apartment since it was space-saving and offered so much storage. But, it's even more perfect in the house with additional space.

Her room conveniently already had a chair rail, so dividing the room into pink and purple would be easy from that perspective. The challenge was finding the right color combo.

I did a lot of Pinterest-ing, trying to find exactly what we wanted to do but it was shockingly tough to find a room that was painted both pink and purple and in a light pastel that would keep it feeling bright and airy, not dark and carnivalesque.

After lots of research and even going to the paint store begging for color matching help, I decided on Benjamin Moore’s Pink Cadillac - a light pastel pink that is just enough pink but not too much. And for the purple, we chose Misty Lilac, another light pastel.

I have to say, this room gave me so much trepidation, but it’s one of my favorite outcomes. The pink and purple look so pretty together. Her room gets a lot of light which helps keep it bright and fresh looking. The trim also all received a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore Simply White, which has warm undertones.

And her curtains are a grayish white which also helped tone down and balance out the sweetness. I fell in love with these lavender glass finials from pottery barn kids and knew they’d look so pretty against the pink wall. I was right!

I had gotten cute room signs and hung them on moving day. When they arrived at the house, they were so excited to see their new signs and new rooms!

She is a sparkly girl through and through, and her bedding and pillows are on brand. Sequined Unicorns, rainbows and a Beauty and the Beast pillow that was hand drawn by my cousin and printed onto a pillow. This was her big sister gift and it’s so special.

Girl's Room Rainbow Cabinets

Oh and the rainbow storage cabinets are one of my favorite items in this room. They are so bright and fun and again, totally on-brand for P. We use these to hide things from Henry and corral tiny pieces (Lord, the tiny pieces!) and other things that don't really have a home, like Shopkins, Grossery Gang pieces, slime, craft stuff and Legos.

To keep it from feeling too sweet, I chose a rug that's distressed and bohemian with lots of colors to offset the pink and purple.

Girly pink jewelry box

On the other end of her bed, I chose a rope basket hamper and smaller rainbow basket for more baby dolls and stuffed animals. I dread the day when she is too grown up for these.

We have a tall white dresser in here as well for extra storage, and her jewelry boxes. This will probably be moved at some point, but for now it works.

So that's it. I'm so happy with how this room turned out. Our next step will be to hang some art in here, ad the desk and call it a day.

What do you think? How have you tackled a kid's - or other's - bright room?
